Some places leave a mark that does not fade when the suitcase is put away. A handful still sit at the front of my mind and I would go back tomorrow if the dates lined up. Tokyo, Lisbon and Kyoto top that short list right now. Each one scored 9 or higher on the Rory Trotter Test and each one still feels unfinished in the best way.
Tokyo stays with me because of the switch between noise and calm. One evening under the lights, the next morning in a temple garden, and both feel necessary. The food never slipped and the city kept revealing smaller corners even after a week. I would land and head straight for a quiet counter and a long night walk.
Lisbon works differently. The light on the hills, the trams climbing, the river just sitting there. It never felt like it was trying to sell me anything. I would return for the late afternoons alone, walking until the legs complained and then finding a simple plate of fish. The pace is the point.
Kyoto earns its place through stillness. Temples and gardens that reward the slower circuit, streets that stay ordinary between the famous gates. A week felt like the minimum. I would go back and do even less, sit longer, walk the same paths at different hours.
These three remain ahead of other strong cities because they balance the memorable with the everyday. You leave knowing there is more left to notice next time.
City Experience
All three sit at the top for good reason. They offer clear identity without locking you into one version of the place.
Food
Consistent and honest. Nothing needed to be fancy to stay memorable.
Value
Lisbon leads here, but none of them punish you if you choose location with a bit of care.
Walkability
Strong in each, especially once you accept the local rhythm of hills or trains.
Family Friendly
They all work when you protect the quieter hours and keep the days flexible.
Tourist Traps
Present but manageable. Early starts and side streets still solve most of the friction.
Rory’s Verdict
GO back to any of these three without overthinking it. They earned the repeat visits by feeling complete and still open at the same time. I would pack light and leave space in the days.
Rory’s Tips
In Tokyo, keep at least one morning completely clear of plans. The quieter corners appear when you stop chasing.
Lisbon is best when you walk more than you ride. The hills make more sense on foot.
Kyoto rewards returning to the same garden at a different time of day. The light changes everything.
Stay slightly outside the busiest zones in all three. The evenings improve and so does the sleep.
Leave the last day lighter than the first. These cities work better when you stop trying to close every loop.
