As a general rule my recent life has been defined by work, skill development, and building relationships. From July 4th to July 8th, however, I did something I haven’t done in nearly 2 years:

1. Normal people would call this a vacation. I stepped away. 1

For the past four days I haven’t done anything at all… it’s the first time in nearly 20 months that I’ve gone more than 24-36 hours without doing something. I didn’t attend a single a networking event, develop any new skills or concepts, work, spend anytime on 2. Hmm… technically I wrote a few blog posts but I’m making a larger point here. social media channels 2… nothing.

Things became very quiet, and I took the opportunity to just think. I thought about everything I do, everything I don’t, and everything I’m going to do.

I discovered that a lot of it didn’t make sense, some of it could be done differently, and more of it still could be done better (or not at all).

Things in HR are also a little bit clearer, now. Professionally, I’ll return to work today with a revised approach to dealing with my client group, solving problems, and dealing with challenges. I see things from a different point of view than I did before.

Everything takes on a different shape and complexity when you’re right up against it all the time. So step back occasionally and get some perspective.

You’ll be surprised at what you see.

As always, please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
