Everyone responds to pressure a little bit differently.
For some, this activates the fight or flight response. Others still recede from 1. According to Jennifer Miller this may not be the worst thing in the world. pressure, deferring the problem to another day. 1
Others thrive under pressure. When faced with tough challenges they are at at their absolute best. It makes them feel alive.
A good manager recognizes where all of their directs fall along this spectrum.
Everyone has different limits. I believe it is a good idea for a manager to help his/her directs find them – and even to push them to occasionally overextend themselves. This is where growth happens.
