1. The first thing I asked myself was “How does this advice align with my goal of maximizing lifetime earnings?“ I think it passes. As I worked though my RSS feed this morning, I saw the below quote: 1
I found this message powerful, as (for me) it speaks to the importance of both work/life balance and career narrative:
1. The importance of work/life balance and enjoying life’s journey
To the first point, sometimes it’s easy to get so focused on the next job/promotion/project that in the process one loses sight of the fact that this moment – this exact moment – will never exist again.
You will never be younger than you are in this moment. You will never have more of your life ahead of you than you do right now.
Everyone has goals, but it’s important to cherish the process of accomplishing those goals.
If you’re like me, there will *always* be new goals and challenges. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Life is the longest thing you’ll ever do – and it has many ups and downs.
So keep an eye on the big picture, but also cherish each moment. Each one only happens once, and you only have so much time.
2. Career Narrative
The second point I took from this quote is the importance of career narrative. Do not be in a hurry. You are trying to tell a story with your career than ends with the accomplishment of your goals. Maybe your goals are around money, or perhaps a job title. There could be a specific 2. …Maybe you just want a job in warm weather near the beach.company you want to work for, or specific work that you want to do. 2
All of these are fine goals in and of themselves, and each is worth pursuing.
But take your time, outline a plan, and do it right. Don’t rush through the steps required to reach your end goal simply to check a box.
Be calm, and do it right.
With all that said, I’m making it up as I go along just like everyone else. Did I miss anything? If so, tell me in the comments section below.
